Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin

Elizabeth Hall is a smart almost-sixteen-year-old girl who is supposed to meet her friend Zoey at the mall to help hr pick out a prom dress. Then all of a sudden she wakes up on a strange boat with strange people setting out toward an unknown destination with no recollection of how she got there. Apparently she is dead - hit by a taxi cab and killed instantly, and now she is being taken to "Elsewhere", the land of the not-so-dead. Gabrielle Zevin weaves a creative tale about "life" after death, in which the deceased age backwards in a land parallel to earth until they are young enough to be reborn. I was enthralled by Liz's experiences as she learns how to adapt to her new surroundings and "live" again.
