Everyone in Uglyville waits until they turn 16 to get the operation that will turn you into a prettier and more popular person, also known as "Pretties." Tally used to be one of these people, until she meets another ugly named Shay- who doesn't want to become pretty. Tally soon figures out that not only does the operation change what you look like, but also how you think. Soon, Shay runs away to the Smoke, a secret village for people 16+ who don't want to become pretty. But as soon as she does, Tally realizes there is more to the world than just uglies and pretties- another group of people called speacials- who want the smoke destroyed. Will Tally follow Shay and risk all of their lives, or choose to turn pretty?
