Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer

The year is 793 A.D. A ship full of fierce northmen descends on a peaceful Saxon village. By the time they depart they have captured two villagers, Jack, who is a powerful bard's apprentice, and his sister Lucy. On the voyage back to the raiders homeland Jack's skills as a bard keep him alive and earn him the respect of the crew. By the end of the book Jack has travelled to Jotunheim and back. His travels are all described with great detail and the characters feel like real human beings. I also liked how the book drew on multiple religions and blended mythology and history seamlessly. Personally I believe that this is one of the best books I have read and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of fantasy, history or mythology. Rating: 9.5/10
