The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

This was a well written fantasy novel about Lyra and her expeditions. Lyra grows up in Oxford University and is not the normal girl you would encouter. She is mischievous and daring and she like to explore everything. But her pleasant life is disrupted by a new outbreak of child disappearances. The people who take the children are referred to as the Gobblers. Even though nobody knows it, the Gobbler leaders attends dinner at Oxford University and spots Lyra. The charming and beautiful Gobbler leader is somewhat intoxicating when she speaks and manages to convince her caretakers to let them take Lyra with her. But before she leaves, she is given an unnatural yet interesting object that everybody is after. Lyra takes on a thrilling adventure in this book and I recommend it to anybody who likes fantasy mixed with reality.
